What is BLS Medical Transport?
Basic Life Support (BLS) transport is the foundational tier of non-emergency medical transportation. It is specifically designed for patients who are medically stable but require transport on a stretcher, continuous medical supervision, or basic medical interventions en route. Unlike standard wheelchair vans or rideshare services, a BLS ambulance provides a clinically monitored environment staffed by two state-certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs).
At Medtrek Ambulance, our BLS units operate throughout Naples, Collier County, and Lee County. We frequently handle hospital discharges, interfacility transfers to specialized care centers, trips to and from dialysis treatments, and transportation to outpatient medical appointments. Our goal is to bridge the gap between medical facilities and a patient’s home with an uncompromising focus on safety, dignity, and comfort.
When is a BLS Ambulance Necessary?
A BLS ambulance is the appropriate choice when a patient does not require advanced interventions (like IV medications or cardiac monitoring) but cannot safely travel by car or wheelchair van. Common scenarios requiring BLS transport include:
- Bed-confined patients: Individuals who cannot sit upright in a wheelchair and require stretcher transport.
- Oxygen therapy: Patients dependent on supplemental oxygen who need a continuous, regulated supply monitored by a professional.
- Orthopedic injuries: Patients with severe fractures, post-surgical hip replacements, or those requiring spinal immobilization during transit.
- Psychiatric transport: Safe, supervised transport for patients experiencing mental health crises who are medically stable but require professional oversight.
- General weakness or altered mental status: Patients who are unable to safely assist in their own mobility.
The Medtrek Standard of Care
Our EMTs are rigorously trained to assess patient vitals, administer oxygen, perform basic airway management, and provide CPR and AED intervention should an emergency arise. However, our training goes beyond clinical skills. We pride ourselves on the bedside manner of our crews. We understand that medical transport can be a stressful experience for both patients and their families.
From executing seamless bedside-to-bedside transfers using the latest Stryker Power-LOAD cot fastening systems—which minimize patient jarring and movement—to coordinating with facility nursing staff for detailed patient handoffs, Medtrek ensures a frictionless experience. Every vehicle in our BLS fleet undergoes strict daily inspections and adheres to rigorous sanitization protocols to guarantee the highest standard of infection control.
