What is ALS Medical Transport?

Advanced Life Support (ALS) represents a higher tier of medical transport for patients who require advanced monitoring, assessment, and treatment during transit. Every Medtrek ALS unit is staffed by at least one state-licensed Paramedic paired with an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

Medtrek Ambulance's ALS fleet serves the complex needs of hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and specialty care centers throughout Naples, Marco Island, Fort Myers, and the broader Southwest Florida region. These units are deployed for patients whose medical condition requires proactive management, continuous advanced monitoring, or the potential need for immediate pharmacological intervention while in transit.

When is an ALS Ambulance Required?

ALS transport is federally and state-mandated for patients with specific clinical presentations or ongoing treatments that exceed the scope of an EMT's practice. Common indicators that a patient requires an ALS ambulance include:

  • Continuous Cardiac Monitoring: Patients who are actively experiencing cardiac dysrhythmias, have a recent history of myocardial infarction, or require ongoing 12-lead ECG observation.
  • Intravenous (IV) Therapy: Maintenance of existing IV lines, administration of IV fluids, or the need to push specific IV medications during the trip.
  • Advanced Airway Management: Patients requiring endotracheal intubation, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), or advanced nebulizer treatments.
  • Trauma and Stroke: Medically unstable patients who require continuous high-level assessment and the capability for rapid intervention.
  • Obstetrical Emergencies: Specialized transport for high-risk pregnancies or active labor requiring paramedical oversight.

State-of-the-Art ALS Equipment

To provide this level of care, Medtrek Ambulance equips every ALS vehicle with advanced medical technology. This includes ZOLL X Series monitor/defibrillators, which provide comprehensive vital sign monitoring, non-invasive blood pressure, pulse oximetry, and end-tidal CO2 tracking.

Our Paramedics carry a full complement of advanced life support medications, sophisticated IV infusion pumps, and advanced airway equipment. Combined with our rigorous clinical protocols and medical direction, this ensures that no matter how complex the patient's condition, they receive uninterrupted, hospital-grade care from bedside to bedside.
