What is Critical Care Transport?

Critical Care Transport (CCT) is the highest echelon of ground medical transportation, designed for higher-acuity or unstable patients who require intensive monitoring and treatment during an interfacility transfer. Our CCT program is specifically structured to maintain complex, highly technical interventions from bedside to bedside.

At Medtrek Ambulance, our Critical Care units serve as vital links between community hospitals, specialized stroke or cardiac centers, and tertiary care facilities across Southwest Florida—including complex transfers out of Naples, Fort Myers, and surrounding areas. These units are staffed by elite medical professionals, typically consisting of a Critical Care Paramedic (CCP) and/or a Registered Nurse (RN) with extensive ICU or Emergency Department experience, alongside a specialized EMT driver.

When is a CCT Ambulance Necessary?

CCT is reserved for the most unstable and highly acute patients whose care requirements exceed the scope of standard ALS protocols. An interfacility transfer requires CCT when the patient requires:

• Mechanical Ventilation: Patients who are intubated or require BiPAP/CPAP, requiring transport on complex mechanical ventilators.
• Invasive Hemodynamic Monitoring: Arterial lines (A-lines), central venous pressure (CVP) monitoring, or pulmonary artery catheters.
• Complex Pharmacological Support: Multiple vasoactive drips (e.g., Levophed, Epinephrine), specialized paralytics, sedatives, or highly specific titrations that must be maintained uninterrupted.
• Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps (IABP): Or other specialized mechanical circulatory support devices.
• High-Risk Specialty Transfers: Severe trauma, severe burn victims, active neurosurgical emergencies, or acute cardiac events requiring immediate specialized surgery.

Mobile ICU Technology

To replicate the ICU environment on the road, a Medtrek CCT unit is heavily modified and equipped. Central to our capabilities is the ZOLL Z Vent, an MRI-conditional transport ventilator that delivers hospital-grade ventilation matching the precise settings established by the sending respiratory therapist.

Alongside the ventilator, our units utilize multi-channel IV pump systems (such as the Alaris or Sapphire pumps) capable of managing up to six or more simultaneous infusions. Our ZOLL X Series monitors provide exhaustive telemetry, including 12-lead ECG, multiple invasive pressure channels, capnography (EtCO2), and core temperature monitoring. This profound technological capability ensures that the transition from a hospital bed to an ambulance stretcher does not compromise the continuity of critical care.
